You're so right about Charlie Daniels. When i was in high school, circa 1973, Marshall Tucker came to Birmingham, and the opening acts were Charlie Daniels and Grinderswitch. Since I never liked Daniels' hits--The Devil Went Down to GA, and particularly not "The South's Gonna Do It Again" but really, not even "Uneasy Rider," I thought his act was worthless, and it was sandwiched in between Gridnerswitch--who were really great--and MT, who were good. They brought Daniels out to play fiddle on one tune, but even then, he just seemed like too much of a caricature of what too many people thought all Southern boys were like. Great article Steven!
