Whenever you find an artists like Bowie, the search--long, short--is worth it. I grew up--high school/college--with him in forlorn Alabama. I've written of him many times, but you might understand what it felt like to love Bowie in a world where anyone nonconforming to the mainline was looked at like a subhuman freak in the worst sense.
