The critics i have loved best were the ones from the old Village Voice. Their reviews were essays geared toward educating the reader. Sure, they'd be clear about what they liked and why, but I always felt like I was reading film history/culture that resonated with the world around me. Laways good to see criticism as a tool to help, though i know some critics are in it for egoistic reasons, too.
