On the whole, I'd say "yes" it does, reuben. It does need to make a lasting impression. So, I really appreciate The Box Tops' "The Letter." Killer song, but I was slightly too young to be killed by it when it was released. Now, a more obscure song by the same band, "Soul Deep": I was driving in the car with my Mom, listening to AM radio. This one came on as part of the weekly Top 30 countdown, and I begged to be taken to my closest store to but it: "My love is a river running soul deep." My Mom didn't have time, though, and I'm not sure i ever got it. but I LOVE it and always have and think it's great.
One oher example: I liked 10 CC's "I'm Not in Love" ever since I fist heard it on the radio, from their album The Original Soundtrack. I wondered what the soundtrack was, thinking it was a film. Such a dolt. Anyway, I didn't LOVE it until a college friend, a closeted gay, guy told me he cried when he heard it, every time. I have the image of him standing in his house, playing my copy of the album, which I gladly loaned to him, and his being all alone and for a time, so miserable. How could I NOT love that song.
So thoughtful, Reuben, and it was such a treat to see you last night!
