Good story, James. The one thing, maybe subjectively, that I would contend is that the flag, though maybe not a racist symbol in 1970, nevertheless was used in Alabama anyway--by my Alabama friends--to taunt and get in the face of Black people who dared to integrate schools and other public settings. And in South Carolina, it was raised over the state capitol building in 1962 (or maybe 1963) and no one wondered about that timing.
