December 2017. I was driving back to Alabama to get my mother who had been hospitalized for pneumonia. She had had a lung biopsy. She had COPD. She was almost 85.

I approached the hospital with dread. How would she look? How would she feel? Would I now have a long-term invalid to care for, and what all would that entail?
